When Transformers aired in 1984, who could have suspected we would be still discussing a cartoon pertaining to human like robots that can convert into cars and airplanes in order to save our planet? However what began being a Weekend morning kid's cartoon expanded into a multi-million dollar franchise over the decades. Prime In The Beginning

Action figures are nothing new to the gadget business, and there is little sign today of the pattern slowing down in the near future. The original Optimus Prime action figure incorporated its own trailer to hitch onto it whenever Prime was in his truck theme. The rig's front grill plate has ever since then become synonymous with the "good" transformers of the series, the Autobots. Everyday followers may not be aware that the original name for the Prime toy was "battle convoy", but finally the name was altered by comic book writer/editor Dennis O'Neil. The standard was now set for the next series of Prime figures.

Pre-Millennium Prime

Transformers started to change throughout the 90s after a decade-long run at the head of the group. If you were to look back at the Optimus Prime products, this shift gets to be slight yet visible. The action figures by themselves began to sell as non-transformable toys strangely enough. Many came with accessories like combat platforms and other special features, literally. One variation of Prime in 1993 included an LED pulsating fist.

Prime also went through what you could refer to as a makeover in the early 90s. One line of toys modified the head of the Autobot's standard red, white and blue appearance in favor of a red-black paint job. The shift turned out to be brief however because by this time Prime's image had grown to be associated with the Transformers franchise. The series would actually spin off different off shoots of different transformers in an attempt to keep up with the changing times and capture brand new viewers.

Prime According to Hollywood

Michael Bay's reinvention of the Transformers series debuted in 2007, beginning another generation of youngsters to the adventures of Prime and his Autobots versus Megatron and also the devious Decepticons. Other transformers may have transformed their forms, but Prime stayed basically the same Prime that lasted the test of time. Other Autobots evolved into the most recent versions of sports and utility vehicles, but Bay's Prime kept his big rig transforming same at it's been since the 1980s, albeit with the newest CGI special effects.
